Crouching Tiger, Hidden Badass!
Available now on all major digital platforms and 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on Nov 30, Marvel Studios’ SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS is an action-packed age of a new, heroic era among the MCU! One Marvel fans can rewatch and enjoy never-before-seen bonus material including 11 deleted scenes and a gag reel.
The film stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must face the past he thought he left behind and confront his father, leader of the dangerous Ten Rings organization. The film also stars Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, and Florian Munteanu, with Michelle Yeoh as Ying Nan and Tony Leung as Xu Wenwu.
After a decade of Marvel flicks, it’s safe to say there’s a formula they utilize to tell their stories. It’s a style that places its audience on a trail of build-up that entails charm, humor, adventurous scenarios, adrenaline-ridden action sequences, entertaining battle scenes, character establishment (I.e. hero, villain, and those in between), etc.
That being said, SHANG-CHI doesn’t fall far from Marvel’s familiar formula, but it’s still an interesting, exciting, fun, and engaging origin story that’ll expand MCU’s brigade of badassery. Thoroughly enjoyed its layout, characters (especially the back-and-forth between Awkwafina and Liu), connection to prior films, soundtrack, and overall individuality for this particular hero (who like the GOTG) ran on a level of obscurity, but will now stand underneath and share a spotlight among other established heavy hitters.
Overall, SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS is a hip, new, diversified, cosmic pleasantry that’ll sit high on Marvel’s action/adventure mantle. Its teases are fantastic, too; glad there will be more. My only “gripe” is Disney or Marvel NOT tapping Wu-Tang for a track? (C’mon, bro!)
