Ferrell vs. Wahlberg 2: Domestic Disturbance
If there’s one thing we as movie aficionados can agree on is when something works, it works. That said, it’s no question back in 2010 when we all saw Ferrell and Wahlberg team up for the first time it was quite a sight. Comedic chemistry was on point, and much of that of course isn’t only about their abilities to less loose on screen, but also blessed by a great script. Edgy dialog and crazy scenarios set the pace for it. Fun and funny, I’m someone who believes a comedy is as good as the lines it allows others to live and memorize and keep repeating for days, months, and even years. THE OTHER GUYS was full of them, therefore, leaving a great impression on everyone, especially Ferrell and Wahlberg, who helped give this flick life.
Five years later, we’re at it again with the dynamic duo, only this time there’s a shift from crime fighting partners, to domestic rivals. Well, kinda… DADDY’S HOME follows Brad (Will Ferrell), a kind-hearted, radio executive as he finds himself competing for the affection of his step-children following the unexpected reappearance of his wife’s ex-husband Dusty (Mark Wahlberg).
The end result wasn’t horrible, but it did come off like a watered down, alpha male faceoff. In fairness, for all intents and purposes, it IS geared as a family comedy. So, I get and resect the mildness. Therefore, it was ok. Ferrell and Whalberg have proven to have great chemistry, however, the best of it (personally) was seen before. DADDY’S HOME has an appealing subject-matter that touches redemption to a degree from time-to-time, but the script felt rushed, therefore, presenting thinly cut scenarios and characters I doubt most would care for. On the other hand, its goofiness is what allows this to be enjoyable to an extent, and adding to the joy of watching its leads happens to be Griffin (Hannibal Buress) whose outside-of-the-box involvement with the entire story winds up interesting, leading to some fun scenes with both Will and Mark.
Eh… Sadly, not a memorable piece and truly one that will evaporate fast.
