This week Disney Original documentary Mija, centered on the life of Doris Anahi, had its final screening in New York City ahead of its theatrical release August 5th. The screening took place at Summerstage Central Park as a part of their Rooftop Films Summer Series and was accompanied by live performances from Helado Negro, Silvana Estrada, Jacks Haupt, and Doris Anahi.
With the support of Disney, audiences will be able to see Mija for free in select theaters during a one-week period beginning August 5th ahead of its Disney+ debut on September 16th. “Disney’s decision to make the screenings free prior to the Oscar qualifying run is a unique opportunity to pack the theaters with the folks who need it the most. This is for all the families who understand the immigrant experience, we deserve to see our stories on the big screen,” says Doris of the decision. Audiences in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco will have accessible screenings to see Mija a film that is a love letter to immigrants, their children, and the power of a dream.
This month, Doris will be making her festival debut on August 20th at Ruido Fest in Union Park, Chicago. On August 26th, you can catch Doris performing in Los Angeles at The Ford’s Kikíceañera, a celebration of LA’s queer Latinx music and drag communities, alongside Valentina, Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Ángeles, Neyva, and more!
