It is time, once again, for The Salon to present its unique blend of arts for an entertaining and informative evening in our wonderful loft space in DUMBO on Thursday, January 26 at 7pm. This is a free event.
The Salon is an evening combining together all disciplines of art – from different forms of music to writing to film and theatre and visual art. Four to six artists are showcased, each representing a different art form or genre and a distinctive viewpoint in order to expose the audience to an outlook or experience they would not ordinarily have access to. The Salon is a diverse mix of high-brow and low-brow, experimental and traditional, cultural and generational. This exposure helps encourage understanding and critical thinking in an environment suffering from the lack of these ideas.
Each salon is a unique mix of artists, and this one is shaping up to be no less special. Currently programed, we have the wonderful portrait artist, coming to us from Mexico, EO Bretón, working on a special project with the audience while sharing his story. Mr. Bretón is known for using the stories and words of his subjects to inform his sketches. Also featured is the actress Renata Hinrichs performing a section of her solo show Random Acts. Ms. Hinrichs grew upon the Southside of Chicago in the late 1960s where her father was a young Lutheran Minister on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement. Random Acts explores her experience as a young white girl watching both the outside world and her family as they struggled through times of painful transformation. Spoken word artist Nykemah Warren comes to us from Girl Be Heard, Urban Word Youth Board and Urban Word NYC, and she was a 2014 Youth Poet Laureate Slam Finalist. She brings a strong, wise-beyond-her-years urban voice. Kathleen Bennett Bastis is a mixed media artist who has worked in textiles most of her life. In her later life, she has discovered mixed media, which has breathed a new energy into her expression and exploration. More artists will be announced in the next week.
The Salon will be held on Thursday, January 26 at 7pm in a private residence in DUMBO. It is RSVP only and free to the public. To reserve your space and receive the location, email firstname.lastname@example.org or register at our website www.thesalonnyc.net.
