“We all came in with prior admiration for his work,” says Charlie Hunnam referring to TRIPLE FRONTIER director, J.C. Chandor, at a recent round-table interview in New York City.
Starring Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, Pedro Pascal and Adria Arjona, TRPILE FRONTIER follows a group of former Special Forces operatives reuniting to plan a heist in a sparsely populated multi-border zone of South America. For the first time in their prestigious careers these unsung heroes undertake this dangerous mission for self instead of country. But when events take an unexpected turn and threaten to spiral out of control, their skills, their loyalties and their morals are pushed to a breaking point in an epic battle for survival. Directed by Academy Award nominee J.C. Chandor (Margin Call, All Is Lost, A Most Violent Year) and co-written by Chandor and Academy Award winner Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty).
The leads for this rugged flick joined forces once again on a recent press tour for the release of the Netflix title launching Wednesday, March 13th! On a cold, Sunday (3.3.19) morning in The Big Apple it was separate chats for members of the press as the stars were broken down separately, but all had one thing in common: the love and support for a film that’s been yo-yoing for a few years now. However, a seesaw beginning led to a solid end as TRIPLE FRONTIER finally found its footing. Sticking to the project for quite some time, Ben Affleck mentions his decision to hang strong was “director-based and the material. Given those two things and strong cast was the icing on the cakes.” A cake layered to adrenaline as the story exposes five former Special Ops guys doing their own thing.
And if it’s Special Ops, prior to shooting some training must go into place, right? Hunnam mentions, “four SEAL team guys and one Delta Force operator.” These were the badasses Team FRONTIER was training with. Hunnam adds, “they were all extraordinary. Diverse skill-set. Shocked by how much trust they put in us very, very quickly.” Oscar Isaac adds, “how to think in a tactical way” was a major objective for the technical team training these guys. Isaac also mentions it was about “building our confidence.”
Considering all the tactical stuff going in the film taking place in the jungles, mountains and wild waters, confidence and focus had to be a must. With all sorts of intensity to be absorbed by the cast, Pedro Pascal can now easily joke about how he was “expecting a lot of more testosterone out of these guys. Some real babies in this cast,” followed by how “the mountains kicked my ass.” Referring to the ruggedness and challenges of shooting in mountainous terrain in California to mimic The Andes mountains. Isaac agrees as he adds, “The mountains were particularly difficult. Loose rocks and huge boulders. It was definitely a challenge with the weather conditions.”
All for purpose of exposing reality among a group of men who have been neglected by our society, Affleck mentions, “If we want to paint a pictures that’s accurate, people have to have a greater understanding of what it is to live this life very intensely, and go from 5th gear to 1st gear pretty abruptly.” Much of the intensity portrayed by the characters in the film touch upon a reality that mirrors what our veterans encounter as an aftermath. Seeking a purpose to feel valued. Touchy and intense, TRIPLE FRONTIER does touching on these topics.
As one of the originals cast in the film and hung strong as the title flip-flopped, Adria Arjona mentions her reason for staying on board was she “loved the topics it hits and the question of morality the characters go through.” Regarding her character, she adds how “she’s looking out for herself and her brother. She’s helping these men for that purpose.” Playing a small yet important role in the film, Arjona recalls her time working with the guys as “fun.” “All very talented. They challenged me and made me a better actress.” TRIPLE FRONTIER is a movie inundated with a lot that entertains and engages! A film that takes the whole heist genre to another level, it’s unique and just as powerful as those who play out the story for you. It’s bold! It’s hard! It’s rough! It’s raw! And it’s one that definitely deserves your attention.
