LUCY: Movie Review

Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it!

Ok, well… umm… for starters, I don’t have much to say. Rare seeing as I normally yap and yap like a nagging woman after a flick, but LUCY didn’t have that much of an impact. It’s a crazy flick, but one can expect it knowing writer/director Luc Besson is the man behind the curtain. His resume speaks for itself – and it’s a solid one. But as we all know, the man is a bit nutty and it translates into his work. Not necessarily for everyone, but in some way, shape, or form… Besson’s touch will and can take the realm of cinema from one end of the spectrum to another.

His latest baby, LUCY, exposes us to a woman (Scarlett Johansson) who after accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms her into a ruthless warrior evolved way beyond human logic.

No secret drugs play a role in this piece, but unlike the more subtle, calmly layered, highly intelligent affects and usage we saw in LIMITLESS (2011) with Bradley Cooper, LUCY has a touch of similarities, only this one weighs out evenly as it balances itself on a narrative seesaw between smart and dumb. You know how sometimes you catch a flick that makes you wonder what the fuck it is you’re watching? Well, this is one of them. It starts off as a cool, gangster, crime-laced piece (I won’t give anything away) and it ends up a bizarre, cinematic-acid-trip, Sci-Fi that pretty much goes back to the Big Bang Theory. (Yes, you read correctly.)

LUCY provides a unique script that has lots to endure, so I warn you to disengage your brain before watching. It’s pretty entertaining, but in the end, my personal overview of the film is one that pretty much lays on metaphoric mock among the human race. So there! Aside from its mish-mash of over-the-top silliness and pleasurable scenes with Morgan Freeman, the action sequences involving Johansson made me crave, care and fantasize a lot more about a BLACK WIDOW flick than LUCY!
